EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.




Poultry Farming

Poultry farming is a way of self-employment especially for the rural people. Householders as well as agricultural farmers may have different motives to start a poultry unit. Some may start their poultry as a hobby and others may calculate mainly of the financial aspect. Whatever may be the motive behind this endeavour careful and intelligent planning is essential for it to be success. This programme highlights the basic principles one should keep in mind before starting a poultry farm.

Basics Of Dairy Farming

Dairy farming can be a way of self-employment. This programme deals with basic principles of dairy farming and precautions that one should keep in mind before starting a small or medium sized dairy. It also gives hints about marketing and financing of the project.

Pond Of Plenty

Shot on location, this programme deals with various aspects of fish cultivation in one's own home pond. Mukul is the pivotal character who wishes to cultivate fish in his family pond. He goes to an NGO working in a neighbouring village to get the necessary information.

A Tree And Creeper Money For The Reaper

Often paths leading to one’s home or the separating embankments on the fields are left vacant; but this land can be used gainfully. This programme deals with the cultivation of arecanut and black pepper in a small land holding. Selection of the seedling, planting and care of both arecanut and black pepper are also dealt with in this programme.

Coconut Cultivation -1

This is the first of two programmes on Coconut Farming. In this programme we introduce the coconut tree, a perennial crop. The varieties of coconut plants, the criteria of selecting a mother plant and the method of coconut plantation are discussed in this programme. Shot on location, this programme explores the beneficial side of this cash crop with enormous economic importance with its versatile uses.
