EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.




The Open Door: The Life Of Prof. S.N. Bose

Prof. S.N. Bose, a great physicist, had many interests e.g. literature, art and music. His mind and heart were open doors where ideas and people were allowed un-restricted entry. His family, his friends and students recreate his personality through interviews and the lasting significance of his major work is discussed.

S.N. Bose - The Scientist With A Mission

This programme is a tribute to Bose in the year of his centenary. The programme SCIENTIST WITH A MISSION traces the socio-economic condition within which Bose lived and worked. It traces his academic career to Dhaka University where it all began. Bose's work impressed Einstein so much that he translated and published it because he (Einstein) thought that it was a " beautiful step forward". Though Bose held sway over most of the scientists of his time he was not content with mere academic achievement for he was a committed patriot.

Bose was a scientist and more - he was a scientist with a mission, Albert Einstein once remarked " in my personal dealings with Bose I get the impression that he is a man of unusual gift and depth from whom science has much to expect". This programme is a shorter version of the earlier programme.

Meghnad Saha - The Scientist

Meghnad Saha was a man with a very humble beginning and yet his name has become a land mark in Astrophysics. In this programme his major works on Astrophysics have been discussed. His dedication to science and his patriotism, his faith in hard work and his readiness to face any challenge have become a symbol for the struggling scientists.

Meghnad Saha's life is a testimony to the fact that sincere labour can never go waste. Under very difficult conditions he had struggled to reach the heights that few have dared to think of. The man died, his spirit still lives on in the works he has done in the service of the humanity.
