EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.



Macaulay's Influence On Indian Education

Thomas Babington Macaulay came to India in 1834. He was not an educator, but a man who had definite ideas about what and how education should be. He considered other languages and knowledge to be inferior to English and Western education. He was a controversial man. But his influence is still being felt in Indian education. Part 1 deals with the defining of the values. The teachers meet and discuss their definition of education and values.

This part deals with the practice of the values that are set in the school. It begins with the admission, and takes a look at the atmosphere of teaching and learning in the school where children grow not only academically, but in responsibility and concern as well.

Values In Education - 3: Reaching Out

This programme deals with an aspect that makes the school perhaps one of the most novel institutions in its category: reaching out. The school sends out a number of students to teach in schools in the villages. This adds to their learning process.
