EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.



The Whispering Brook

This programme explores the ecosystem of a hill stream. It tells us what an ecosystem is, describing some of the physicochemical compositions of a hill stream. It also demonstrates a few simple techniques of studying an ecosystem. Students can apply these techniques at home.

Murmur In The Brook

This programme deals with the common living organisms in a hill stream - those that often go unnoticed. It shows us how to collect these organisms and study them and gain a deeper understanding of the ecosystem around us.

The Pristine Hill Stream

This programme is for creating awareness about environment. It looks at the interdependence of various organisms and points out how delicately they are balanced and shows us the importance of maintaining this balance.

Environmetal Mutagenesis

Here the discussion is around chemical pollutants jeopardizing our existence in a nuclear age. Experts researching at the university lend their findings and structured with the help of rich visuals and texts, the programme becomes very informative as well as enjoyable. This programme discusses various facts that we should take note of so that a pollution free environment may be restored for the benefit of humanity.

If You Care For This Planet – 1

This series IF YOU CARE FOR THIS PLANET is set in the lush green, idyllic hills of the Western Ghats in India. The four episodes of this series explore the harm that is done to environment and some ways to restore it. This programme discusses some bare facts about planet earth and the urgency to save it.
