EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.




Links With Our Past

The story of our past is usually told, not by people but by the objects that they used. Through a careful analysis of these objects we may be able to reconstruct an idea of their life - style. Inscriptions on stones, copper plates, and so on, were used in the past for mass communication. This programme examines how these inscriptions are studied, and what kind of information they can give us.

The Precious Casket

This programme is about a casket which is one of the most precious items in the Indian Museum, Calcutta. It is supposed to have once contained the ashes of the Buddha. Its chance discovery has led to hitherto unknown information about the Buddha and related history.

Stories In Stone

A Stupa at Bharhut, a great Buddhist site, had been shifted to a museum from its original place more than a century ago. Focussing on the remains of this great Stupa including punch marked coins, the programme shows how numismatic evidence is important for dating events in Indian history.

Pages From History: The Egyptian Mummy

Egypt is one of the oldest continuous civilizations that the world has today. This programme focuses on a Mummy - the embalmed human body of a human being from the Egyptian civilization. It is now in India. It is estimated that this body is about 4000 years old. How does it look today? How is this preserved? What are the beliefs that go into preserving the body of the dead? This short programme dwells upon these aspects.

Asoka And His Times -1

ASOKA AND HIS TIMES -1 emphasises Asoka's early life, his elevation to the throne of the emperor What distinguished Asoka from his forefathers was the lofty ideals of Kingship. While entrusting some of the administrative responsibilities to his officers, Asoka felt as confident as a father who handed over his newborn baby to an expert nurse. Thus we encounter here the ideal of paternal rulership where Asoka remains unexcelled.

Asoka and His Times - 2 focuses on Asoka's Dharma -its essence, implications and impact on the society. Asoka's Dhamma has a clear political message. The ruler would take a paternal attitude towards his subjects and maintain not only law and order but also a high moral and ethical standard. All these actions on the part of the ruler was to be reciprocated by firm devotion of the subjects to the ruler's interest. Asoka's Dharma even today, is a subject of controversy to the students of history.
