EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.

Algebraic Structure -1: Theory Of Sets

Duration : 25:02     Year : 1988     Code No. 623

This is a four part series on Algebraic Structure. A group of students and their teacher have designed this series of programmes. It is a very great help to students of mathematics. In this programme we are introduced to basic concepts from the set theory, some laws pertaining to it and ways to verify them. It also seeks to spread the message that knowledge grows in sharing.

Algebraic Structure -2: Relations And Mappings

Duration : 25:38     Year : 1988     Code No.624

This programme deals with an important field of mathematics: Relations and Mappings. In order to understand these concepts systematically, ideas like ordered pair; Cartesian product and Partition are introduced. The programme ends by illustrating some types of mappings such as bijective, injective and subjective.

Algebraic Structure - 3: Groups

Duration : 23:21     Year : 1988     Code No.626

This programme deals with the mathematical concepts of Groups. Two students discuss this concept and demonstrate, through various illustrations and life-examples, the various properties of Groups. The properties discussed are Closure, Associativity, Existence of Inverse, and Existence of Identity.

Algebraic Structure -4: Boolean Algebra

Duration : 22:30     Year : 1988     Code No.629

George Boole's thought-provoking algebra revolutionized mathematics, logic and science. Boolean Algebra provides the basis for all electronic machines. The laws of this Algebra are explained and discussed using charts and the practical demonstration of circuits.

Mathematics Counts – 1

Duration : 15:00     Year : 1989     Code No.257

Is mathematics a queen or a handmaid? That is, is it pure and abstract or is it practical and useful? Curriculum developers and teachers must come to terms with both aspects of mathematics. In this first part, Sir Wilfred Cockcroft, Chairman and Chief Executive, Secondary Examinations Council in England, discusses the two faces of mathematics and explains, with the help of examples, the dilemma of the curriculum developer.
