EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.




Vitamins: The Protective Elements –1

This programme deals with Vitamins. Vitamins are divided into 2 groups: fat-soluble, and water-soluble. In this episode we have looked into the sources, functions, deficiency symptoms and hyper vitaminosis of the fat-soluble vitamins - A, D, E & K.

As we have discussed earlier, Vitamins play an important role in nutrition, physiology, biochemistry and medicine. Hence an understanding of their functions is necessary. The second episode on vitamins discusses the water-soluble vitamins - B-Complex and C.

Haemostasis

This programme deals with Homeostasis, i.e. how the body stops bleeding. A person with an open wound would bleed to death if the body did not have mechanisms to overcome this emergency. Haemostasis is that life-saving mechanism. How does it work?

Pharmacy In Modern India

This programme is based on the three different aspects of pharmacy, namely, the academia, the industry and the Drug Control Authority. It gives us a very basic and preliminary idea about the scope of pharmacy in modern India.

Diabetes - The Silent Killer

India is fast becoming the diabetic capital of the world. Once someone develops this situation, how can one deal with it? This programme deals with the do's and don’ts of diabetes in general. It begins by showing one of the major complications of diabetes i.e. a heart attack. The programme also discusses other problems and complications of diabetes and provides certain precautionary measures to help a diabetic keep his or her diabetes in control.
