EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.




Coal -1: The Captive Sun

In this programme we deal with the formation of coal. Here we also discuss the different types of coal, namely peat, lignite, bituminous and anthracite. We are given a brief outline on the two main types of deposits in India as well as the different types of coal that are generally available all over the world.

Coal -2: From Pithead To Blast Furnace

This episode deals with the process of extraction of coal and its various uses. Methods such as underground mining and surface mining used in India are discussed. The varieties of coal found in India and the adverse effects of coal mining on the environment are also discussed.

Coal - 3: Earth On Fire

The third part of this series deals with the implications of coal mining on the environment. It also reveals how this is being taken care of with the help of the Environment Management Plan. Mining Companies themselves are taking various measures and precautions. But due to lack of technology and economic constraints, a lot remains to be done regarding this issue.

Copper: Extraction

This program gives us a brief history of copper ore. It tells us where the ore occurs and how it is mined. It also shows different stages of the copper extraction process practiced in the copper industry in India.
