EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.




Folklore

This programme introduces the subject of folklore. It gives a definition of folklore and points out various elements and instances of the creation and propagation of folklore in society. It is a very fascinating study. At the end of the programme some names of the universities where folklore could be studied also are given, for the benefit of those who want to pursue its study further.

Peer pressure is one very crucial factor, which some times leads to drug abuse. Often, it is friends who offer drugs for the first time. So refusal becomes extremely difficult. However, self-assertion is also important. There are some ways of saying no, and these techniques are demonstrated by a group called 'motivation', through role-playing. Two counsellors from England are also interviewed on the topic.

Stress Without Duress

This programme introduces the subject of coping with stress in a better way. Although we cannot, and indeed must not, avoid stress we can learn to meet it efficiently and live with it successfully rather than letting stress overwhelm us to the extent that it affects our mental and physical health adversely. Some useful rules for avoiding or reducing stress are given in this programme.

Rehabilitation Of Disabled Children

This programme aims at creating self-reliance among the disabled children. It is important to look at the world from the children’s point of view rather than that of the adult. It is only then that we understand their problems. As the title suggests it is important to rehabilitate the disabled children. But it is important to realise that the responsibility is not only of the disabled children but that of the normal people as well.

Peoples’ Organisation -1

This programme aims at creating self-reliance among the rural poor. This programme can be summed up as using the people as resources of development. When people got together and organized themselves, they were able to solve a many issues which were pressing them down and in addition they got a better quality of life. The first part of this programme where we see how confidence-building measures were introduced by an NGO in order to build up this rural poor.
