EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.

Facilities At EMRC

Over a period of time as the equipment scenario changed, the University Grants Commission equipped EMRC Calcutta with Betacam and digital equipment. Today we can boast of state of the art equipment both in acquisition and post-production. The studio though modest, handles three camera (DXC-D35) set up with CCUs and switcher. There are four professional non-linear editing systems with their own vcrs for capturing and printing to tape. There is also a facility to print to DVD or CD. For outdoor shooting either Sony or Ikegami cameras with docked vcrs are available. There is also an option to use the more compact DSR PD-170P if one so desires. In addition to this all the production staff are equipped with their own desk-top computers - networked, so that they can share data among them. In addition to this broadband connection is available for all the staff to help programme research and production. A modest library is available for reference work. A video library consisting of all the programmes produced by EMRC is also maintained at the Centre.

A new addition to EMRC is the EDUSAT. It is a device through which one can reach anywhere, anytime. Depending on the receiving end, it can have two way audio and video communication. Though its full potential is not yet exploited, it perhaps points to some possibilities in the coming years. All this is housed in a two-storied building. Though situated in the geographic centre of Calcutta, the space within is a bit constraining. Already plans are afoot to build an entirely new building for EMRC in a sprawling 5-acre plot off the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. When this comes up other possibilities such as campus radio and extension classes can be thought of seriously.
