EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.

Future

With the change in name from Educational Media Research Centre to Educational Multimedia Research Centre, the functioning has changed. Besides making educational television programmes, we are required to transform these programmes into e-content. Once the web-enabled content isdeveloped, it is sent to CEC where it is posted on their website for free access. Thus a student can, theoretically, access the programme anytime anywhere.

The introduction of Edusat was mentioned earlier. Technically it is now possible to reach anywhere from EMRC through Edusat; that is nothing new and that can be done through website. But there is a difference: the receiving station can interact simultaneously and this interaction can be both through audio and video. That opens up more possibilities. It is possible to take the lecture of a college teacher in Calcutta, live, to a college in the Sundarbans. It is possible for the students to ask questions from there and the teacher can respond from Calcutta. The teaching learning community then widens and the services of a teacher is spread much wider than the confines of a classroom.
