EMRC St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata is part of a large family of EMRCs spread across India. This family has in fact 18 members, including the head office at New Delhi. The other members are at Srinagar, Roorkee, Patiala, Jodhpur, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Sagar, Imphal, Pune, Mysore, Chennai, Madurai, Calicut and two at Hyderabad.

All the centres come under the purview of the university of that particular place. In Hyderabad one is with the Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) and the other is with Osmania University. It is only the Kolkata EMRC that comes under the purview of St. Xavier’s college.

All funding – both for running expenses and equipment – comes from the University Grants Commission. The coordination of production, telecast and other programme related affairs is done by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi. The administration is done by the host university/college.

The Staff And Their Work

Out of a total of 25 staff, four are engaged in administration and the others are in production. There are four producers, three production assistants, two cameramen, one engineer, and two technical assistants working directly for production. The Research Scientist conducts occasional research for programme evaluation, audience preference etc. Besides these, there are others such as driver, peons, etc. All the staff are qualified for their respective area of work and the recruitment is made as per government norms.

Production Process

After the producer gets a programme idea it is whetted with the director. Some criteria for acceptance have been set. The programme idea should be eminently educational. Since these programmes will go on national telecast, the idea should be relevant for a sizeable number of viewers across the country, preferably students. If the idea is visually rich and multidisciplinary, it stands a greater chance of acceptance than ideas that are merely conceptual.

Once it is accepted, the producer begins researching the programme. Then a subject expert is sought. The producer prepares a concept note for the expert and then discusses the programme. Then a working script is prepared based on which shooting is done. After editing the programme, the commentary is written and integrated with the programme. Thereafter the programme goes for a rigorous quality check. Here both the technical aspect and content are checked.

.
Once the programme passes through all these stages, it leaves EMRC for CEC, New Delhi. There it is subjected to further scrutiny and if corrections are required, the programmes are sent back for revision. Thus a programme that goes on air is assured of good quality – both technically and academically
